Coil
Live at Play Game On-Only Connect, The Barbican, London, UK
April 27, 2002
This is the audience recording already circulating, but in lossless FLAC as opposed to MP3. Semi-common mediocre quality audience recording.
A video by Robin Rimbaud is known to exist, thought only a few snippets of it have surfaced so far.
1. Anarcadia: All Horned Animals
2. Amethyst Deceivers (Version 2)
3. Slur
4. A Cold Cell
5. Sick Mirrors
6. An Unearthly Red
Exclusive setlist. Debut performance of “An Unearthly Red.”
John Balance
Peter Christopherson
Simon Norris (Ossian Brown)
Cliff Stapleton – hurdy-gurdy
Mike York – Breton bagpipes
“An Unearthly Red” replaces “Backwards” as the loud, abrasive closer to the set. At this point, it was likely not titled “An Unearthly Red” – the nascent lyrics do not reference George W. Bush, but rather something about “mushroom boys,” and there is no video evidence to prove that they used the flight simulator backing projection during the song. John announces it by saying “Captain Clark welcomes you aboard flight 23,” which is a reference to a lyric in the Throbbing Gristle song “The/An Old Man Smiled.”
An attendee from this gig recalls: “I remember this gig very well. A bunch of hipsters behind me laughing and saying that Coil were shit. I'm not a violent person but it told them 'If you don't be quiet and show some respect, I'm going to knock you all through the fucking wall'. All 8 of them walked out. I got to enjoy the wonderful set.”
